Masculinity in Crisis

This research explores the theory of 'masculinity in crisis' and how modern men feel that they have to behave, act and feel. I have also related it to some films - both historic and modern to see if attitudes towards men and perceptions of men have changed over time. They have - for example, men can be more openly gay however they often feel as though they will still be judged, this is seen with Geoff in the 1961 film 'A Taste of Honey' where he tries to hide it and is kicked out of his apartment, and also with Sayyid and Rashid in the 2012 film 'My Bother the Devil' where society as a whole is more accepting to homosexuality but the area in which Rashid lives, his religion, and his previous gang do not approve and so this creates a crisis.

I think that this theory is something people should be mindful of in modern day society, however we have not decided to showcase masculine vulnerability in our music video. We see the young boy grow into a teenager and it is implied that both the male and female protagonists struggle to initially deal with and act on their emotions; the resolution at the end of the music video shows them overcoming any emotional issues and embracing their love together.

Technological advancements and 'The Virtual Revolution'

Technological advancements and 'The Virtual Revolution'

The technological advancements from 'the virtual revolution' has enabled me to create and share my media work. For example, the site that Yasmin and I uploaded our final production to, YouTube, was created in 2005 and works because of the world wide web, which allowed me to access documents and websites in order to research, and plan for my production.

Below is an early essay on the subject of online media growth: -

Youth Culture Essay Piece

Youth Culture Essay Piece

This is a case study that I have compiled - it focuses on the theories of; hegemony, moral panic, 'hoodie cinema', masculinity in crisis, the reception theory, the hypodermic needle theory, the cultivation theory, and Hebdige's 'trouble or fun' theory. I have explained and given a range of examples on how the theories apply to my exemplar texts/television programmes/films, and how they are connected to historic and contemporary media as well as exploring their impact on society.

Another theory is the two step flow theory which suggest that the mass media is interpreted by ‘opinion leaders’ and then by the ‘mass audience’ – therefore a lot of media influences are biased and are a construction of different opinions as well the original input.

According to http://www.slideshare.net/jphibbert1979/media-and-collective-identity-theory-revision Charles Reid Acland theorised that the delinquent depictions of young people has reinforced hegemony, this is known as the 'Ideology of protection' which is the idea that young people need constant monitoring because this is they are in time of life when they learn about values and they are wanted to conform to the polite and hegemonic societal viewpoints.

In addition, Henry Giroux also created a theory that shows how the youth are mistreated within the media - they are described as an 'Empty category', which explains why adults don't seem to understand them or what it is like to be in their generation, and therefore adults put what they think youths and their generation are link in the 'empty' space.
The theories in this essay can link to our music video as we see the young couple struggle to deal with their emotions when separated from one-another, they stereotypically isolate themselves. However, they do actively find each other and therefore find support for themselves - this defies the violent, or contrastingly lazy stereotypes of young people.

Gerbner’s cultivation theory suggests that television has small, gradual, long term effects on viewers and that people who watch a lot of TV are more influenced than those who watch less – this theory implies that the viewers’ original opinions are reinforced, rather than altered which the hypodermic needle theory suggests. This allegorises that the media reflects society so as to reinforce what people think, and what they want to see – this links to uses and gratifications theory, people want to watch things that will gratify them and having something that you agree with on television often does this. This links to our music video because the song we chose evokes feelings of loss and gain - it is an emotional roller-coaster, in my opinion, the lyrics repeatedly say 'Home' (hence the title of the song) and so I thought that it should be about comfort and happiness instead of a literal building/'home'. The metaphoric saying 'home is where the heart is', that is also repeated in the song, to me refers to home being safe and where you ideally want to start and end up in. This gave us the idea of a romance themed music video where a couple are close, they grow up together as friends but in the stereotypically awkward early teenage years have obviously grown apart but the main thing is that they end up together in the end, when they are more grown up: people who listen to this sort of acoustic, romantic and poetic song often want to see a music video that reflects and animates the lyrics, and therefore they will want the couple to be together at the end of the music video. The ending of the music video is stereotypically happy and predictable but it is gratifying for us and our target audience.

Song Ideas for our Music Video

Song Ideas for our Music Video

We want our song to be about love, fate, and somehow link to water or a bridge because we plan to make our video cyclical and start by filming two children (my brother Finlay and his friend Lottie) playing in the river before they grow up and we show an older couple (played by Jess - Lottie's older sister - and Teo) embracing on the bridge above the river (showing that have grown up) supposedly years later. The water and river represents an obstacle that the lovers have to overcome, it also represents a natural force that reflects their love.

Chosen A2 Brief Presentation - Music Video Ideas

Chosen Brief Presentation - Music Video Ideas

Yasmin Lyons and I will be working on our A2 project together; we plan to make a narrative music video. To do this we chose this exam brief: 'A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the three options; a website homepage for the band, a cover for its release on DVD, and/or a magazine advertisement for the DVD'. We have chosen to create a cover for the DVD release and a magazine article because we feel as though we are artistic and can advertise our product well through these formats, and our English Literature and Language skills can help us write a magazine article.

We want our music video to follow the lives of two young people - a boy and a girl - who have known each other all their lives, and began as friends but became distanced in their early teens but fall in love and reunite at the end of the video. It will be in chronological order but there will be jump cuts to show lengths of time (years) that have passed. The video will revolve around; love, emotion, nature, and fate. The genre of the video will be romance. We will film some of it in the Summer to represent the happy moments of the couple's relationship and some of it in Autumn and Winter when they begin to lose touch - the last scene will be shot at sunset which will coincide with the music's largest crescendo to represent the coming together of the couple and show that even though they weren't always together they have chosen to spend the rest of their lives together, the rest of the video will include them embracing each other. The video will be suitable for all ages but will be aimed at young people, especially young couples. We will aim to make people feel emotional when watching the film, as we want the couple to be almost willed together.
